How does teeth whitening work?

The active component in most teeth whitening gels is a high concentration of either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.

This is the agent that bleaches the tooth enamel and removes yellow stains.

Am I a suitable candidate for teeth whitening?

The ideal candidate for cosmetic teeth whitening is an adult with healthy teeth and gums. For most people teeth whitening yields excellent results. The Enlighten’s Evolution™ treatment can whiten teeth up to 16 shades brighter. Teeth whitening can only work on natural teeth and superficial surface stains. It will not work on any of your dental restorations such as crowns or bridges.

Teeth whitening can aggravate sensitive teeth. Still, you may be suitable for low concentration carbamide peroxide whitening treatments. Your dentist can advise you on the best product to use to whiten your teeth.

We do not recommend whitening treatments for pregnant or lactating women to avoid passing whitening chemicals on to the foetus or breastfeeding infant.

Are there side effects of teeth whitening?

Most people who undergo teeth whitening treatments experience little to no side effects and are very pleased with their results. However, there is a minor group who may experience side effects such as extra sensitive teeth or gum irritation.
