A single dental implant and crown are a popular and effective solution for replacing a missing tooth. A dental implant replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root, making it a much more comprehensive restoration.

What is dental implant surgery?

Dental implant surgery involves placing a small titanium screw into the jawbone under a local anaesthetic. As the gums and jaw bone heal, the implant fuses with the surrounding jaw bone, anchoring it in place like a natural tooth root.

Once the implant is firmly fused in place, your dentist will attach a dental crown that looks and feels like your natural teeth.

This option effectively restores the aesthetic look and functionality of your teeth without negatively impacting your remaining natural teeth.

Implants are highly-durable and can last for more than 20 years with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

Dental implants also help to prevent and reverse the effects of a bone recession in the jaw.

Dental implants can replace one or several missing teeth. With an All-on-Four® or All-on-Six procedure, we can even replace full arches of teeth with prosthetics within a single appointment, using only a handful of implants. These full-mouth restoration procedures also depend far less on bone density in the jaw.

In some cases, we also use implants to provide extra stability and security for other prosthetics such as bridges and dentures.

Are dental implants safe?

A dental implant is a safe and effective solution for replacing a missing tooth. Choosing a knowledgeable, well-trained implant dentist can help minimise any complications should they arise. It is important that you and your dentist review your health history which could affect the success rate, so you are fully informed about the benefits and risks involved in dental implant surgery.

Why should I choose a single-tooth implant over a bridge?

A dental implant has some advantages over other tooth replacement options. In terms of aesthetics, a dental implant looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

Unlike using a tooth-supported dental bridge (which requires adjacent teeth), it does not affect the integrity of the neighbouring teeth and the jawbone is better preserved.

Your gums can also recede around a bridge, leaving a visible defect when the metal base of the bridge is exposed. The cement that holds the bridge can wash out, making it a hotspot for bacteria to breed and decay the anchor teeth.

In the long run, a single implant can be more aesthetically pleasing and easier to maintain than a bridge.

What will happen without treatment?

Your jawbone begins to shrink from lack of stimulation. Losing your teeth will affect your smile and possibly  change the shape of your face.

Is the procedure uncomfortable?

Dental implant surgeries are typically performed under local anaesthesia. Patients may experience some post-operative swelling and residual discomfort which can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers.

How long does the dental implant process take?

The dental implant process will take between 3 to 9 months from evaluation to the fitting of the crown.

Can I get a dental implant immediately after an extraction?

Dentists typically wait for 2-3 months after extracting a tooth before placing an implant. There are single-stage tooth implants, but they are not for everyone.

The procedure is only recommended to patients who qualify in order to ensure proper integration of the implant with your bone, for a better and wider smile.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Similar to your natural teeth, dental implants can last a lifetime as long as you maintain a high standard of oral hygiene. They can improve your appearance, confidence and enable you to enjoy the foods you like.

What is the success rate of dental implants?

For a healthy individual with good oral hygiene, dental implants have reported success rates of 90-95%.
